Step into the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and art. Explore the mysteries of sleep, dreams, and Jungian psychology in an innovative and experiential installation for all ages. Come make Jungian art with us!

Unlocking the mysteries of sleep and dreams holds the key to enhancing human well-being and fostering creativity, paving the way for transformative breakthroughs in fields ranging from mental health to innovation. It has been a full century since Jung first created his magnificently illustrated dream journal, The Red Book. Modern sleep science indicates those brain wave patterns found in sleep and dream states are also found in daydreaming and creativity–both important parts of art-making.

Dreamscapes Unveiled will explore creativity and dreaming through multiple perspectives of art, psychology, and science. Dreamscapes Unveiled includes an interactive gallery show highlighting four major aspects of Jungian Psychology (Self-Individuation, Archetypes, Dreams and Active Imagination, and Alchemy), including an entry concept piece created collaboratively by artists Michelle Gray, Suzanne Botello, and Lisa Lee Pearce. There is also an Interactive Slide Show and Art Installation that will allow you to create a Jungian Image Art Piece to take home.

The Gallery Open Houses occur on May 18, 24, 25 and June 7.  Come and enjoy our Gallery Show, music, and refreshments!

These artists will also host 3 workshops on Intuitive Art Making on May 21-23:

Synchronicity, Active Imagination, and Carl Jung's Red Book

Join Jungian Psychologist and Coach, Michelle Gray, on a journey of how Synchronicity and Active Imagination combine to provide remarkable opportunities for creativity. Michelle will share how Synchronicity and Active Imagination have played a significant part in The Dreamscapes Unveiled Experience and will give the audience an opportunity to reflect on how Synchronicity has played a part in their own lives.

The Slideshow will feature full color illustrations from Carl Jung's Red Book- which is considered a seminal book in the formation of Jungian Psychology. The Red Book is the one of the primary origins for Art Therapy, Art Journaling, and Active Imagination.

Michelle will illustrate how the concepts of Synchronicity and Active Imagination combined to help Jung create the Red Book. The audience will then participate in an Active Imagination Experience featuring one or more Red Book Illustrations, and then have an opportunity to explore and reflect how these concepts could increase their own creative flow.

Self-individuation

Becoming by Suzanne Botello utilizes the metaphor of the Butterfly to create a potent and beautiful image for transformation.

Out of the Depths and Into the Light By Lisa Lee Pearce portrays the life-long struggle of working through the Shadow to integrate those hidden aspects into a more authentic, individuated human.

The Ouroborus of My Prima Materia provided an avenue of experiential process art-making for Michelle Gray’s individuation Journey. The Ouroboros, an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, represents the perpetual cycle of creation and destruction, life and death, unification of opposites, and the infinite nature of the universe. In alchemical psychology, as emphasized by Carl Jung, the Ouroboros symbolizes the process of individuation—the integration and harmonization of the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche and the continuous journey toward self-realization and wholeness. The central spiral of this piece is a Descansos or “a resting place” for Michelle’s processed “primary material” in the form of old photographs of past experiences, processed, integrated, and turned into something else-Art.

archetypes

Jung introduced the concept of archetypes-universal, fundamental, primordial images and themes present in the collective unconscious; a part of the psyche shared among all humans. These archetypes are inherited potentials, actualized through individual experiences and expressed in dreams, myths, and art. Carl Jung identified archetypes as innate, universal, energetic prototypes for ideas which influence the ways individuals perceive and interact with the world.  They manifest in various forms and serve as a framework for understanding complex psychological concepts and experiences. Jung believed that recognizing and integrating these archetypes can lead to greater self-awareness and psychological development, as they reflect essential aspects of the human experience. We have created three female-oriented representations of archetypes.  They may need no explanation.

The Great Mother archetype is one of the most universally recognized symbols, representing nurturing, care, and unconditional love. She embodies fertility, creation, and the source of life itself. The Mother provides protection, guidance, and sustenance, fostering growth and development. The Mother archetype helps individuals understand their relationships with their own mothers and the maternal aspects of their psyche, aiding in the development of a nurturing attitude towards themselves and others. Artist-Suzanne Botello

The High Priestess is an archetype that embodies intuition, mystery, and spiritual insight. Representing the keeper of secrets and the guardian of the unconscious, she symbolizes the ability to access hidden knowledge and the deeper truths of the psyche-guiding others to explore their inner worlds and uncover the wisdom that lies within. She is often associated with the moon and the feminine aspects of divinity, reflecting her deep connection to the cycles of nature and the unconscious mind. In Jungian psychology, the High Priestess encourages individuals to trust their inner voice, embrace their intuitive abilities, and seek spiritual and personal transformation through self-reflection and meditation. Artist- Michelle Gray

The Artist archetype embodies creativity, innovation, and the ability to transform thoughts and emotions into tangible forms of expression. She represents the pursuit of beauty, truth, and deeper understanding through artistic endeavors. The Artist is driven by an innate need to create often drawing inspiration from personal experiences, nature, and the complexities of human emotions. She values authenticity and originality, striving to bring her unique vision to life. In Jungian psychology, the Artist is seen as a powerful force for personal and collective transformation encouraging individuals to embrace their creativity, overcome self-doubt, and express their true selves through their chosen art forms. Artist- Lisa Lee Pearce

dreams and active imagination

In Carl Jung's theory, dreams are a window into the unconscious mind. Jung believed that dreams are not random but rather meaningful expressions of the unconscious, revealing hidden desires, fears, and conflicts. According to Jung, dreams are highly symbolic and can provide profound insights into an individual's psyche. By understanding these symbols, themes, and archetypes, individuals can achieve greater self-awareness and personal growth. The goal is to uncover the underlying messages and themes of the dream, facilitating a deeper understanding of the self. By engaging with their dreams, individuals can integrate unconscious aspects of their psyche, leading to greater psychological balance and wholeness.

Jung created a method called Active imagination which involves engaging with one's unconscious mind by focusing on dreams, spontaneous images, thoughts, and fantasies. Active imagination requires conscious participation where the individual dialogues with these inner images and figures as if they were autonomous beings. By allowing the unconscious to express itself freely, individuals can uncover hidden emotions, conflicts, and potential solutions.  Jung emphasized that the images and narratives arising be explored and elaborated upon. This exploration can lead to profound insights and transformative experiences. It encourages a deeper understanding of oneself and fosters the development of a more balanced and harmonious psyche, a more integrated and authentic sense of self. The practice of active imagination can be carried out in various forms, including writing, art-making, drama and movement.

Come play in our Altar for Dreams and Visions. Please take a marble, go to the table and find a disc you would like to decorate or just paste onto the flat side to make a token for you to take home.  While you are there, try a dialogue with Jung’s Red Book images which you see on the screen.

Alchemy

Alchemy is an ancient practice, deeply intertwined with the quest for understanding the nature of matter and the universe, as well as the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and personal transformation. In addition to its material goals, alchemical processes were often seen as metaphors for inner transformation and self-realization. The symbolic language of alchemy, such as the search for the philosopher's stone, was interpreted by later thinkers like Carl Jung as representing the process of individuation—the integration and harmonization of the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche.

Alchemical psychology is an approach developed primarily by Carl Jung that draws on the shadow, achieving clarity, developing inner wisdom, and attaining wholeness the rich symbolism and transformative processes of alchemy to understand and facilitate psychological growth. Jung perceived alchemy as more than an early form of chemistry; he saw it as a profound metaphor for the inner transformation and individuation process. The stages of alchemical work—nigredo (blackening), albedo (whitening), citrinitas (yellowing), and rubedo (reddening)—mirror the psychological processes of confronting the shadow, achieving clarity, developing inner wisdom, and attaining wholeness.

Jung's alchemical psychology emphasizes the importance of engaging with the unconscious mind through active imagination, dreams, and symbols. By interpreting these alchemical symbols, individuals can gain insights into their personal development and psychological struggles. Alchemical psychology thus bridges ancient wisdom with modern therapeutic practices, offering a unique path to self-discovery and healing.

The Tree of Life Rubedo represents a potent and multifaceted symbol found in traditions around the world. It typically represents the interconnectedness of all life, the unity of creation, and the pathway to spiritual enlightenment and understanding. The Tree of Life, therefore, serves as a map for personal and collective transformation and can be related to the four stages of alchemy. Each stage represents a crucial aspect of inner alchemy, leading the seeker from darkness and dissolution to enlightenment and unity with the divine, echoing the expansive and interconnected nature of the Tree of Life itself.

Firstly, Nigredo (blackening) corresponds to the roots of the Tree of Life, symbolizing the initial stage of dissolution and breaking down of the ego. This phase is often associated with darkness, chaos, and the confrontation of shadow aspects within the psyche. The roots of the Tree of Life delve deep into the underworld, signifying the descent into the unconscious mind where the process of inner purification begins.

Secondly, Albedo (whitening) aligns with the trunk and lower branches of the Tree of Life. This stage represents purification and the emergence of clarity and illumination. The whitening process symbolizes the cleansing and refinement of the individual's consciousness, leading to greater self-awareness and spiritual insight.

Thirdly, Citrinitas (yellowing) corresponds to the middle branches of the Tree of Life, signifying the integration of opposites and the harmonization of conflicting elements within the psyche. The yellowing stage represents the development of inner wisdom and the transformation of consciousness, analogous to the growth and expansion of the tree's branches.

Finally, Rubedo (reddening) relates to the upper branches and crown of the Tree of Life, symbolizing the culmination of the alchemical process and the attainment of spiritual perfection. This stage represents the union of the individual with the divine, characterized by enlightenment, wholeness, and the realization of one's true self. The reddening phase signifies the full blossoming and flourishing of the individual's spiritual potential, mirroring the expansive growth and radiant energy of the tree's uppermost branches.

As Above, So Below II by Michelle Gray conceptualizes the four-step alchemical formula representing the process of personal and spiritual transformation. This ancient sequence of operations is used metaphorically in Jungian psychology to describe the journey of individuation—the integration and harmonization of the conscious and unconscious aspects of the psyche. The first stage, Calcinatio (Calcination), involves the burning away of impurities. In psychological terms, it represents the breakdown of the ego and the release of the false self, often through intense experiences that challenge one's identity and beliefs. The second stage, Solutio (Solution), involves dissolving the remaining impurities in water, symbolizing the melting away of rigid structures and the dissolution of the ego's boundaries. This stage encourages a state of fluidity and openness, allowing for the emergence of new insights and understanding. Following Solutio, the third stage is Coagulatio (Coagulation), where the dissolved substances are reconstituted into a new, more solid form. Psychologically, Coagulatio represents the integration of new insights and aspects of the self into a more cohesive and unified personality. This stage is about building a new identity based on a more profound understanding of oneself and the world. The final stage of the alchemical process continues this transformative journey. Sublimatio (Sublimation), the fourth stage, involves the purification and elevation of the soul, symbolized by the transformation of a substance into vapor. This stage represents spiritual ascent and the pursuit of higher consciousness, transcending mundane concerns to achieve a more enlightened state.
